Herts on Cloud 9 after big weekend

Herts Baseball Club is celebrating a record weekend, with the club’s adult teams securing 9 wins out of the 10 games they played in the BBF leagues.

In the NBL, Toucans split with the Essex Arrows while the Hawks swept the London Minotaurs at Finsbury Park, and the Ravens started their season by taking two against London Mercury (including a walkoff in Game 1 of their double-header). The Raptors kept rolling – they too got a walkoff win, this one against the Essex Redbacks, then followed it up with a more dominant victory in part 2.

Our focus is on the Herts Eagles of Division 5, who picked up their first wins. They lit up Flood Field on Sunday afternoon, riding two fast starts and holding off comebacks to secure a sweep of the Richmond Dukes.

From the very first inning of a wild Game 1 — which ended 17-15 — the Eagles’ offense set the tone. Herts stormed out with five runs in the opening frame, immediately putting Richmond on the back foot. When the Dukes tried to answer, the Eagles came right back with another five-run burst in the second to keep control of the scoreboard.

Even as the home side chipped away through the middle innings, Herts never lost their composure. Zach Amdur was right in the middle of the action, driving in a pair and crossing the plate twice in a productive afternoon. Laurence Mohan also delivered a strong performance, collecting multiple hits and helping keep innings alive as the Eagles repeatedly turned traffic on the bases into runs.

Jamie Bronson came through with important RBI moments as Herts kept applying pressure inning after inning. Matthew Price weighed in too, reaching base consistently and scoring three times.

On the mound, Jack Relton battled hard. He surrendered more walks than you’d like, but struck out four and gave up only three hits. In a contest where runs were flying in from both sides, the Eagles staff did enough in the key moments to protect the lead and close things out.

Richmond made things tense late with a push in the final uncapped inning, but the early damage from Herts proved decisive.

The Eagles completed an emphatic afternoon with a confident 17–9 victory in the second half of the double-header. For the second game running, Herts came out swinging and plated five runs immediately to seize momentum. After adding three more in the second, the Eagles effectively blew the game open with another five-run surge in the third inning.

James Moores delivered one of the strongest performances of the day, collecting three hits and driving in a pair as he repeatedly sparked rallies from the middle of the order. Chaks Baiya was equally influential, scoring four runs and reaching base consistently while George Thomas added a sharp two-hit performance with an RBI.

On the mound, Danny Chan earned the win after guiding Herts through the early innings and giving the Eagles a platform to build on. While the Dukes mounted a late push with six runs in the final inning, they were too far behind.

By the final out, the Eagles had shown resilience, persistence and the ability to keep momentum firmly in their dugout.
