AUDIO: BBC RADIO 5 LIVE SX PREVIEWS THE 2010 NBC COMING TO HERTS THIS WEEKEND

British Baseball legends Jonny Gould and Josh Chetwynd took time to preview the 2010 National Baseball Championships during the Sunday evening coverage of the New York Yankees vs the Chicago White Sox on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. The preview included a guest appearance by Rob Rance whose Bracknell Blazers will look to defend their 2009 title when they go out onto Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, 4 September, in the opening game of the NBCs.

BRITISH BASEBALL BUZZING WITH EXCITEMENT AS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS DRAW NEARER

This article was first published on www.britishbaseball.org

The British Baseball postseason is underway and the sense of anticipation and excitement around the country can hardly be contained. After five months and 521 games in the British baseball leagues, the best teams in the country are now battling in the playoffs to book a place in the National Baseball Championships (NBC) which will take place on the weekend of 4 and 5 September to decide the 2010 champions.

NBL PLAYOFFS

Mildenhall advanced to the postseason with two wins against direct rivals Herts Falcons on the final day of the regular season. This sets up an intriguing playoff line-up in Britain’s top baseball league.

Both NBL playoff games will be played at Richmond’s Connare Field this Saturday. First up is the clash between Mildenhall and Southampton. The problem that has plagued the Bulldogs all season long is the fact that most of its players are US servicemen whose unpredictable working schedule can sometimes leave their squad down to bare bones. If their top performers are available then they will be a very awkward opponent and the Mustangs will have their work cut out, as they found out two weeks ago when they lost 0-6 and 2-3 to Mildenhall.

In the second game of the day starting at 3:30 pm, the Richmond Flames will meet the Croydon Pirates. After a slow start the Flames have picked up speed just at the right time. 2009 MVP Ryan Bird is back firing on all cylinders. He was the wining pitcher in the 13-0 win against 2009 champions Bracknell and that can only be bad news for the Pirates. Also returning for the Flames is Robbie Unsell, who was last year’s stolen base leader but missed several games this season after a freakish head injury trying to field a ground ball.

Despite Richmond’s recent return to form, Croydon have proven this year that they are capable of beating any NBL opponent. They have some very dangerous players in their line-up, most notably Home Run Champion Maikel Azcuy.

NBL Playoffs (Connare Field, Richmond, Saturday 28 August 2010)12:00, Mildenhall Bulldogs (10-16) @ Southampton Mustangs (13-15).
15:30, Croydon Pirates (10-18) @ Richmond Flames (17-11).

AAA-LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

Oxford’s win against the Bracknell Inferno on Sunday confirmed them as the AAA (South) winners and they go straight through to the AAA NBC. This leaves the Bracknell Inferno and Herts Eagles fighting for the last remaining place in the AAA National Finals. They will meet this Saturday at Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead. The two teams have been involved in some epic encounters so far this year so this playoff game is a mouth-watering prospect.

Can the Blue Sox repeat their walk-off win against Birmingham or will the Maple Leafs get their revenge

AA-LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

While the National Baseball League (NBL) and AAA League completed their regular season schedule on Sunday, teams from the AA and Single-A Leagues were already going head-to-head.

The Leicester Blue Sox appear to be carrying a great deal of momentum into the postseason. After winning the AA (Midlands) divisional title earlier this month they met the Sheffield Bladerunners who were the runners-up in AA (North). The Blue Sox eased to a 19-9 win with Shannon Henry picking up another win on the mound, while Oscar Martinez provided the highlight of the game with a towering two-run home run.

Meanwhile, a second team from the Midlands booked a place in the AA Semi-Finals. The Birmingham Maple Leafs produced the most dominating performance in the 2010 postseason so far with a 18-1 blowout win over the Bolton Robots of Doom, which is the best team in AA (North). Birmingham and Leicester will clash once again at Western Park this Saturday at 12.00 noon in a repeat of the Midlands title decider. The Blue Sox came out on top that time, but the Maple Leafs will feel that have been given an opportunity for sweet revenge.

The team with the best record in the AA League, Richmond Knights, booked their place in the Semi-Final with a 10-6 win over the Windsor Bears. A two-run home run by Windsor slugger Clint Milner was not enough for the team from Berkshire. The Knights will meet the Poole Piranhas in the Semi-Final, after they overcame the Essex Archers by a score of 17-3. Shannon Hall was the winning pitcher, while Archers Manager, Darren Ludlow was saddled with the loss.

Despite the loss, Essex can be very proud of reaching the AA League playoffs in their first year after promotion from the Single-A League. And so, in accordance with the formbook, the Poole Piranhas will be travelling to Ham Ground to face the Richmond Knights. They Knights have the upper hand as they won convincingly when the two teams met in the first week of August in the regular season.

AA Playoffs (Semi-Finals) Saturday, 28 August 201012:00, Birmingham Maple Leafs (15-5) @ Leicester Blue Sox (15-5) (Western Park, Leicester).
12:00, Poole Piranhas (13-5) @ Richmond Knights (17-1) (Ham Ground Richmond).

A-LEAGUE PLAYOFFS

The Chelmsford Clippers stunned British Baseball with a 16-12 win over the Richmond Dragons, who went into the playoffs as the favourite to go all the way and win the A-League title.

The Clippers clinched a place in the postseason in the last minute after the Old Timers dropped out. They may have had an average regular season with a modest 6-7 record, but that doesn’t seem to have affected them and their win over Richmond was an amazing achievement for a team in their first year of existence.

In the semi-final Chelmsford will play against Guildford, who produced a dominant performance to beat the Braintree Rays 22-14. Matt Bruce pitched a complete nine-inning win, recording 10 strikeouts for the Mavericks. Their better regular season record has given them home field advantage in the Semi-Final.

The other Semi-Final will be between the Humber Pilots and the MK Bucks, both of whom progress after convincing wins in their quarter-final games. Humber beat the Leicester Blue Sox in a high-scoring 36-12 win. MVP for the Pilots proved to be Lee Evans, who was the winning pitcher and also contributed offensively with a home run. MK Bucks beat Manchester Torrent 22-3. Tom Lloyd was the winning pitcher for the Bucks and his teammate Ross Barnes scored an inside-the-park home run. Barnes’ may have played his last game of the season as he is due to be posted to Afghanistan imminently. Will this setback prove to be decisive when the Bucks host the Pilots this Saturday?

A Playoffs (Semi-Finals) Saturday, 28 August 201014:00, Humber Pilots (14-8) @ Milton Keynes Bucks (13-7) (Woughton on the Green, Milton Keynes).
14:30, Chelmsford Clippers (6-7) @ Guildford Mavericks (9-4) (Broadwater School, Guildford).

BULLDOGS KNOCK FALCONS OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS

This article by BSUK special correspondent Simon Fitzjohn, was first published on www.britishbaseball.org

The Mildenhall Bulldogs claimed the prized final playoff spot in 2010, and the Richmond Flames laid down an impressive marker as the National Baseball League regular season drew to a close on Sunday 21 August. The Bulldogs swept the Herts Falcons in a winner-takes-all showdown, while the Flames eased past heavyweights Bracknell Blazers.

HERTS FALCONS AT MILDENHALL BULLDOGS

Anyone expecting a tension-filled, tight brace of encounters were to be disappointed as the Bulldogs rolled to impressive 11-4 and 18-1 victories. Barry Wiles and Ken Reber picked up the wins on the mound, sentencing Pete Kikel and Nic Goetz to defeat and erasing the Falcons from the play-off picture in the process.  Herts’ Aspi Dimitrov said, “My immediate reaction is obviously one of disappointment.  We were so close to making it, but all of the credit must go to Mildenhall.  They fully deserved their wins.” “I would predict that if they have their full roster available for the play-offs they are going to surprise a few people and could even go all the way.”

BRACKNELL BLAZERS AT RICHMOND FLAMES

Richmond swept the Blazers in impressive fashion to wrap-up their third-placed finish in style.  The Flames were 13-0 and 6-5 winners, with Ryan Bird and Rob Unsell taking the pitching honours. Coach Grant Delzoppo also clubbed a two-run home run in game one as part of an impressive all-round display. Delzoppo said: “We are really pleased.  To get two wins and finish the season on a high is a real plus for us.  We beat their best pitchers.  It is always good to beat a side like Bracknell and this will give us a real boost heading into the play-offs.”

HERTS AND ESSEX SHARE SPOILS TO SET UP PLAYOFF SHOWDOWN THIS SUNDAY

The Herts Falcons suffered a setback in their mission to reach the National League playoffs.  A spirited fight back by the visiting Essex Arrows in the last inning resulted in a heartbreaking loss for the Falcons. Despite this, a combination of results in the other NBL games and a convincing win in the second game of the day meant that the loss in game one was not as costly as first thought.

Having beaten the Arrows in their previous two meetings this season, the Falcons went into the game with confidence but the tension of the postseason race was evident.  Herts took a slender lead early in the game, but the visitors kept in touch with their starting pitcher Matt Gilbert keeping batters off balance by changing speed very effectively.  Herts went into the seventh and final inning with a 3-2 lead and it looked as though starting pitcher Pete Kikel would complete the game with a win after he struck out the lead off batter, Ben Sayer.  A great deal of credit has to be given to the Essex Arrows at that point as they didn’t give up.  Their next two batters got on base after they were both hit by pitches.  A double by the always dangerous Rich Chesterton tied the game.  Up next was Essex’s cleanup batter Matt Gilbert and the Falcons decided to walk him intentionally to load the bases.  Leftfielder Brandon Florence was the next to bat and he drove the ball all the way to the outfield wall to bring in 3 more runs.  In total 5 runs came in and that proved to be too much for the home team to recover from in the bottom of the inning.

Stung by that loss, the Falcons came back fighting in the second game.  They took a 14-1 lead in just three innings of play.  Their bats were on fire.  Third baseman Alex Ganster went 4-for-4 driving in 5 runs.  Carlos Casal from Hemel Hempstead and Jason Greenberg had two hits each but the biggest ovation was for shortstop Brandon Deal who launched the ball high over the left-centerfield wall for a 3-run home run.  He was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the game.  He will miss the remaining games of the season as he will be on military duty overseas over the next few weeks, but that was a great way to end his season and send the Falcons on a high going into next week’s do-or-die last game of the season against playoff rivals Mildenhall.

After the games Herts Falcons Manager, Jason Greenberg said: “”It was a disappointment that we let game one on Sunday slip through our fingers.  We had a slim one-run lead going into the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. But the boys battled back in game two, and I was pleased with the confidence and momentum we found right from the first pitch.  That’s how we need to begin our series against the Bulldogs this Sunday: with the knowledge that we are going to get ahead early, and stay ahead until the final out is made.”

With Mildenhall picking up two wins against Southampton, losing game one against Essex has turned out to be not as costly as first thought.  The Herts Falcons will be travelling to RAF Feltwell this Sunday knowing that they must win one of their two games against the Bulldogs to book their place in the playoffs.  If they win both games they would jump over both Mildenhall and Croydon which would give them better seeding in the playoffs.  Losing both games is not an option as that would signal the end of the season for the boys from Hemel Hempstead.

HERTS IN THE NEWS: EAGLES AND FALCONS HOPING TO FLY HOME FOR SHOWPIECE

The following article was first published in the Hemel Gazette

With any luck two Hemel Hempstead-based baseball teams could be back at their Grovehill home for the end-of-season showpiece event.

Herts Falcons and the Eagles will hope to be back for the National Senior Baseball Championships (NBC) on September 4 and 5. The club, which just this season completed its second pitch, has been chosen to host the event much to the delight of president Aspi Dimitrov:

“A lot of people have really got involved with the project over the last few years and it’s great the British Baseball Federation have given us the vote of confidence by awarding the event to us. “Hopefully we will not disappoint.”

The champions of each of the four leagues will be decided at the championships. The NBL division Falcons, the top team at the club, have an uphill task ahead of them. They have just four games left to earn a place in the qualifying rounds for the finals. Their latest result was a double-header split against Croydon Pirates on Sunday.Falcons lost the first of their away games at Pirates 8-2, but came back in the second to win 11-6. They go up against the Essex Arrows this weekend.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are more sure of a spot in the finals, and could by-pass the qualifying round should they finish in top spot come next weekend, when they face league-leaders Oxford Kings. Eagles strolled to two easy victories as they kept up the pressure on the league-leaders on Sunday. The AAA-division side beat the London Metros 15-5 and 11-1, extending their winning streak to nine games. A win this weekend will make sure they finish top of the pile and hence head straight into the final four.

“We really want to make sure the Eagles and Falcons make it,” added Aspi, who also plays for the Falcons.

Elsewhere on the weekend the AA-League Herts Hawks took on the Windsor Bears but lost 19-9 and 18-8. In the A-League, the Old Timers of north London beat the Raptors for the second time this season.

DRAMATIC COMEBACK WIN KEEPS FALCONS POSTSEASON HOPES ALIVE

Going into the sixth inning and trailing 5-2 the Herts Falcons stunned their playoff rivals Croydon by scoring nine runs in the last two innings of the game.  This incredible comeback keeps the Falcons firmly in the race for the postseason playoffs.

The Herts Falcons went into their double-header against the Croydon Pirates knowing that a sweep would put them in pole position for the playoffs, but on the other hand if they were to lose both games, their chances of postseason glory would virtually disappear.  Croydon faced a similar predicament which gave this game a postseason feel.

Croydon took the lead in the second inning after a solo homerun by Maikel Azcuy.  Herts came back with two runs of their own in the third inning but Croydon regained the lead again in the bottom of the inning.  Going into the bottom of the fifth with the game finely poised at 3-2 Jose Sosa delivered a devastating blow by driving the ball over the left field wall with the bases loaded for a grand slam.  This took the game beyond the Falcons.

This meant that the second game of the double header became “must-win” for the visitors from Hertfordshire.  They started aggressively taking an early lead on an infield single by Marty Cullen which glanced off the glove of the pitcher allowing Luis Goncalves to come home.  Croydon bounced right back and after 5 innings they had a commanding 5-2 lead.  Their lead could have been even bigger if it wasn’t for some incredible defensive plays including a spectacular diving catch by left fielder Marc Martinez.  With only two innings remaining the Falcons produced one of the comebacks of the season.  They first tied the game scoring 3 runs in the sixth which included a 2-run double by Carlos Casal. Falcons starting pitcher, Nic Goetz, was still going strong on the mound and he retired the Pirates quickly in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game tied at 5-5.  In the seventh Herts continued their onslaught.  The offensive pressure was too much for the Pirates to take as six more runs came in.

Despite Croydon putting runners on second and third with nobody out in the final inning, Goetz held on allowing only one run to come in.  That one run may have appeared to be nothing more than a consolation for the Pirates, but it could have huge implications if Croydon and Herts end the regular season with identical win-loss records.  In that situation the League’s tie-break rules would come into effect.  In their head-to-head encounters Croydon and Herts each have 2 wins and 2 losses, which means that the tie would have to be broken by looking at who has conceded the lowest number of runs in the games between Croydon and Herts.  Thanks to that consolation run Croydon would jump above Herts as they have conceded 1 run less than them after Sunday’s epic games.

This may prove to be decisive, but at the same time it may actually be a blessing in disguise as the Falcons now know their task very clearly.  They need to win three out of their remaining four games and this would guarantee their place in the playoffs. After their incredible comeback win, the Falcons have the momentum with them.  Next up for them is a home clash with rivals Essex.  Can they do it?

NBCs ARE COMING TO HERTS FORTHE FIRST TIME IN THE CLUB’S HISTORY

Grovehill Ballpark has been chosen to host the 2010 National Baseball Championships

The British Baseball Federation has announced that the National Senior Baseball Championships (NBC) event has been awarded to Herts Baseball Club. It will take place on the weekend of 4 and 5 September at Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead. Major development of the venue has taken place over the last few years and this year a second baseball diamond was added to the venue. It is now the only baseball venue in the country with two diamonds and permanent outfield wall on both of them.

The NBC is the showpiece event in the British Baseball season to decide the 2010 champions in the four British Baseball Leagues. The NBL and AAA League NBCs will adopt last year’s double-elimination format with four teams battling it out over a total of six games in each League over the two days. The champions in the AA and Single-A Leagues will be determined over a three-week knockout playoff format with the two best teams in each league meeting in their respective Finals on 5 September 2010.

Some of the teams have already booked their place in the NBC, others are still fighting for automatic qualification or entry via the playoffs which will be played on Saturday 21 and Saturday 28 August at different venues around Great Britain.

The Herts Falcons (Left) and the Herts Eagles (right) have a big battle ahead of them but they must reach the NBCs

This news is fantastic for everyone connected with Herts Baseball.  The key now is for the Herts teams to reach the Championships.  The Herts Falcons are involved in a dramatic battle with Croydon and Mildenhall to clinch a playoff place in the NBL.  Only two out of the three teams will make it.

In the AAA League the Herts Eagles have a 4-game winning streak which has taken within touching distance of the league leaders, Oxford.  The two teams meet in the final game of the regular season on Sunday, 15 August.  Whoever come son top will go to the NBC automatically.  But first the Eagles face the London Metros this Sunday at Grivehill Ballpark.

The Hawks and Raptors may be out of the AA and Single-A races, respectively, but players in those teams may still play a part in the postseason if they are called up by the Falcons or Eagles.

CROYDON, HERTS AND MILDENHALL CHASE A PLAYOFF SPOT IN NBL

The Croydon Pirates all but booked their top-six spot and Herts and Mildenhall split their crucial doubleheader in the only Week 15 National Baseball League action on August 2.

NBL Special Correspondent Simon Fitzjohn reports:

MILDENHALL BULLDOGS @ HERTS FALCONS

Mildenhall and Herts both have a chance of claiming sixth spot after the teams split their doubleheader in wildly contrasting games.

The Falcons squeezed to a 6-5 win in Game One, Pete Kikel outdueling Barry Wiles on the mound. But the Bulldogs responded with a 19-8 blowout in Game Two. John Blose took the win in this game, with Dan Kerry (pictured right) launching a home run.

Herts’ Aspi Dimitrov said: “We left the field quite disappointed, but after a day or so I think we will look at it differently. We are as we were, but with a round of games less to play, which means that the remaining games become even more important. “We missed an opportunity to move up in the standings” Dimitrov continued, “but we have not lost any ground in the race for the play-offs.”

ESSEX ARROWS @ CROYDON PIRATES

An understrength Essex side was put to the sword by the Pirates, who boosted their record to 9-15 with a sweep of both games. The 7-0 and 17-4 wins saw Croydon pitchers Tim Ssali and Jose Sosa pick up the victories, with Matt Gilbert and Richard Chesteron the Essex losers. With the Arrows struggling for numbers, 64-year-old coach Phil Chesterton was even pressed into playing first base in Game Two. Phil Chesterton said: “The key for us is to get through to the end of the season without forfeiting a game. We knew when we entered this season we were going to face some hard truths and we have not been disappointed. “That may sound negative,” Chesterton continued, “but it isn’t. We are definitely a work in progress and I think next season will be when all the hard work starts to pay off.”

FALCONS FINAL INNING DISASTER

The Bracknell Blazers and London Mets strengthened their place at the top of the BBF’s National Baseball League standings in Week 14, while Southampton and Richmond continued to squabble over third spot as the race to the National Baseball League play-offs is heating up.

NBL Special Correspondent Simon Fitzohn reports:

BRACKNELL BLAZERS @ HERTS FALCONS

Bracknell Blazers earned a sweep of their own against Herts, in wildly contrasting games.  Game One was a comfortable 12-1 win, with Kirby Brooks on the mound, Rob Rance clubbing a home run. But Game Two was a different matter entirely, the Blazers having to rally in the final inning for a 10-4 win. Aspi Dimitrov was saddled with the loss. A dejected Dimitrov said: “We had a 4-3 lead going into the final inning of the second game. We played really, really well and in the end I let the team down blowing the save.

“Our future is still in our own hands though.” Dimitrov added. “It is very disappointing and it hurts right now, but we have to get over that and keep battling.”

LONDON METS @ ESSEX ARROWS

An understrength London Mets side still had too much in their locker for the Essex Arrows, earning a sweep by 10-0 and 9-6 scorelines. Jason Roberts took the win in Game One, with Reed Wilson on the mound for Game Two. Roberts also caught the eye with the bat, scampering for an inside-the-park home run in the opening game. The Mets’ Alex Pike said: “The first game was pretty straightforward, but we only had nine men and it was a case of trying people out in different positions. We know we are going to make the finals and the key now is for us to try a few things out. “Anything could happen in the finals,” Pike added, “and we have to be prepared for what they throw up.”

CROYDON PIRATES @ MILDENHALL BULLDOGS

Mildenhall finally got back to winning ways by seeing off the Croydon Pirates in both their games, 5-4 and 17-2. Kevin Culver pitched the win in Game One and Jason Coffey followed up in Game Two, with Jose Perez smashing a home run. Mildenhall’s Gabriel Macias said: “It feels good to be back. We came out hard and we came out hungry. It was just what we needed. It had been a long time coming, but we still feel we can make the play-offs.”

SOUTHAMPTON MUSTANGS @RICHMOND FLAMES

The battle for third spot showed no signs of clearing up after Southampton and Richmond split this doubleheader. Southampton took Game One 7-5, thanks to Lee Ralph’s pitching and despite home runs from Grant Delzoppo and Ryan Bird. Bird was at it again in Game Two, clubbing another home run along with Michael Osborn, who also took the 6-1 win on the mound. Delzoppo said: “It was a little bit disappointing. We had plenty of chances in the first game but didn’t take them and gave runs away on errors. But it was really pleasing for us to bounce back the way we did and get the win in the second game.”

NEW HERTS BASEBALL CAP AT THE HERTS SHOP FROM TOMORROW

The new Herts Baseball Caps have finally arrived. They will be available to buy at the ballpark starting from Sunday, 25 July, during the adult league games and in the following weekends at most Little League and Adult events.

The new Herts cap is a premium model fitted cap available in three different sizes. It features a 3D raised stitch logo as well as “hertsbaseball.com” on the back. The manufacturer’s brand name is embroidered on the left side of the cap.

This is a higher grade cap and its price is slightly higher than the previous model. The price is £12. Registered Little League players receive a discount so the price for them is £10.
