Herts charity day is record success

Herts charity day is record success

Herts’ third annual Lou Gehrig Day event at Grovehill was the biggest yet – raising more than £2,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

This far outstrips even the success of previous years, and is a measure of the generosity of the Herts baseball community.

Lou Gehrig Day is held annually across MLB to raise awareness and funding to fight this devastating degenerative condition and honour Lou Gehrig, the legendary New York Yankees star whose career and life it cut short. MND is known as ‘Lou Gehrig Disease’, or ALS, in the United States.

The 2026 event at Grovehill featured a league double-header between the Herts Hawks and the Herts Ravens of Division 4. The baseball action lived up to the occasion, with the Hawks squeaking a 4-3 win in a dramatic opening game. They took Game 2 in a more comfortable 13-2 scoreline.

There were games for the kids, including pitching and hitting challenges — and the crucial element of a barbecue which also offered cold drinks and home-made cakes.

The main attraction was a raffle of fantastic prizes which had been donated by MLB Europe. There were playing jerseys of the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers, among others. Also there to be won was Boston Red Sox training gear and World Series commemorative hoodies.

The raffle helped push the final total to £2,177. This year, fundraisers were able to register as “team members” and drum up donations ahead of the day – big thanks go to the most successful campaigners Pete and Mickey Hogg, and George Thomas.

And big thanks from Herts to everyone who donated, who bought raffle tickets, or hot dogs, or sweets. Thanks also to our helpers, volunteers and photographers and to all of the families who came to Grovehill, pulled up a chair to watch the baseball, and had a great day out in the sunshine.

The funds will be shared between MNDA’s national office to fund medical research, and the Hertfordshire branch which supports locals living with the condition.

Pete Hogg of the Hawks has been the driving force of the event for Herts: “It was fantastic to see families, fans and players all pitching in to make the event a success. I’m really grateful to everyone who volunteered their time and effort”.

He added: “The MND Association is a charity that has been close to my heart for several years and as a lifelong baseball fan, I felt inspired to bring Lou Gehrig Day to the UK. I wanted to give back and create an opportunity for everyone to take part and do something fun.”

The MND Association has said: “Events like this are a very important way of increasing awareness of MND and without the funds raised, we would not be able to fund equipment for people living with this challenging disease in Hertfordshire.”

Hawks Take Flight: Grovehill Sweep Over Mercury

Hawks Take Flight: Grovehill Sweep Over Mercury

The Herts Hawks turned Grovehill into a fortress on Sunday, powering past London Mercury in both ends of a Division 4 double header. Behind disciplined pitching, timely hitting, and a relentless approach within the 5-run inning cap rules, the Hawks controlled the tempo across both games to secure a confident sweep.

The opener set the tone immediately. Herts came out aggressive and clinical, putting pressure on Mercury from the first inning. A big early rally — capped by clutch hitting from the middle of the order — quickly put runs on the board and forced Mercury onto the back foot. The Hawks made full use of the 5-run cap, maximising innings without overextending, and repeating the formula again in the second to build a commanding lead.

On the mound, Giuseppe Basilea kept things steady, limiting damage and working efficiently through traffic. Despite a brief pushback from Mercury in the middle innings, Herts responded well defensively, tightening up in the field and shutting down any momentum. The bats stayed hot throughout, with contributions across the lineup — Rangajith leading the way with a standout performance at the plate, well supported by Cornish and Hogg. By the time the final out was recorded, the Hawks had secured a convincing 13–7 win.

Game two followed a similar script, though with a slightly more measured start. Mercury showed more resistance early on, but Herts stayed composed and began to edge ahead through consistent at-bats and smart base running. The breakthrough came mid-game, where another strong inning — again maximising the cap — created separation on the scoreboard.

Darrin Ward took control on the mound in the second game, delivering a strong complete performance. Throwing strikes and keeping hitters off balance, he racked up key outs at crucial moments and prevented Mercury from stringing together rallies. Defensively, the Hawks backed him up well, making the routine plays and avoiding the errors that can so often swing momentum at this level.

Offensively, Rangajith again set the tone, continuing his excellent day with multiple key hits and RBIs. Support came from across the lineup, with Lama, Basilea, and Dunn all contributing to keep the scoreboard ticking. Even as Mercury threatened late, Herts remained in control, closing out an 8–3 victory to complete the sweep.

Across both games, the Hawks showed exactly what you want to see early in the season — improving at-bats, disciplined pitching, and growing confidence in game situations. The ability to repeatedly capitalise within the 5-run inning structure proved decisive, turning good innings into winning ones.

Final Scores:
Herts Hawks 13–7 London Mercury
Herts Hawks 8–3 London Mercury

A Day of Firsts and Big Steps Forward for Herts Youth

A Day of Firsts and Big Steps Forward for Herts Youth

It was a big day for Herts Youth Baseball at Farnham Park, with both the Griffins U12s and Phoenix U14s taking to the field and showing exactly what this club is all about — effort, improvement and a love for the game.

For the Griffins U12s, it was a day of firsts. With several players making their debut, there were some early nerves in game one against a strong LYBL side. But even in a tough opener, the team battled and got on the board.

The Phoenix U14s had a similarly challenging but encouraging day. Game one proved tough against an organised LYBL side, but the group stuck at it and kept competing throughout.

In game two, the response was outstanding.

The Phoenix bats came alive early, putting together multiple scoring innings and showing real confidence at the plate. There was a noticeable step up in energy and execution, with stronger defence behind some solid pitching and catching. Like the U12s, this was a team growing into the day — and by the second game, they were playing with real belief.

Across both teams, the biggest takeaway was clear: from first pitch to last, the improvement was huge. Debuts, big plays, learning moments and growing confidence — exactly what the start of a season should look like.

A proud day for coaches, players and parents alike.

U12 Results:
Herts Griffins 1 – 16 LYBL
Herts Griffins 4 – 7 LYBL

U14 Results:
Herts Phoenix 1 – 15 LYBL

Herts pitches in for MND and Lou Gehrig Day

Herts pitches in for MND and Lou Gehrig Day

Herts baseball club pitched-in to organise a successful charity fundraiser at Grovehill last week – bringing to the UK an initiative run by Major League Baseball (MLB) to fight Motor Neurone Disease.

The club welcomed up to 200 baseball fans and curious locals to the ballpark to enjoy a hotdog while watching competitive league games featuring many of the club’s international players, and take part in its charity raffle and family-friendly batting and throwing competitions.

Lou Gehrig Day is held annually across MLB to raise awareness and funding to fight the devastating degenerative condition and honour Lou Gehrig, the legendary New York Yankees star whose career and life it cut short. It’s known as ‘Lou Gehrig Disease’, or ALS, in the United States.

MLB kindly backed Herts’ efforts by donating official merchandise for its charity raffle, including several New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Angels jerseys.  Other prizes were generously donated by UK baseball businesses Baseball Outlet, Home Plate Cards, and The 108, as well as club members and supporters.

This created great excitement and helped to raise over £1,300. The funds will be shared between MNDA’s national office to fund medical research, and the Hertfordshire branch which supports locals living with the condition.

Raffle prizes generously donated

Playing a key role in organising the event – now in its second year at Herts – was Pete Hogg from St Albans, who plays for Herts Hawks in the British Baseball Federation AA league: “The MND Association is a charity that has been close to my heart for several years and as a lifelong baseball fan, I felt inspired to bring Lou Gehrig Day to the UK. I wanted to give back and create an opportunity for everyone to take part and do something fun.

“I’m really grateful to everyone who volunteered their time and effort, and donated prizes, food, and equipment to make it happen,” said Hogg.

“We had a fantastic mix of attendees, from family and friends of the club, to members of the public curious about baseball, and people specifically there to support the charity, which was amazing to see. Everybody made the day feel very special and I’m extra thankful too for all the donations that came from people who couldn’t make it down to the event.”

Also in attendance was Lindsey Lucas, Branch Chair at MNDA Hertfordshire, who delivered the ceremonial first pitch – a pre-game tradition where a guest of honor throws a baseball to officially start the game.

She commented: “The Hertfordshire Branch are immensely grateful to Pete Hogg and Herts Baseball Club for their efforts in organising their Lou Gehrig Day event. Events like this are a very important way of increasing awareness of MND and without the funds raised, we would not be able to fund equipment for people living with this challenging disease in Hertfordshire.”

MND is a progressive disease that affects the nerves found in the brain and spinal cord known as motor neurones. It is life-shortening and there is no cure.

Baseball on the radio

Baseball on the radio

It’s another big year for Herts baseball club. 2025 has seen the adult section expand to seven teams — including a return to the NBL with the Toucans, and the arrival of the Harriers in Double-A.

It will also see the return of our fund-raising Lou Gehrig Day on June 8th at Grovehill Ballpark.

To talk about all of that – and to add another big moment into the mix — we invited the BBC to come on down to Grovehill to try our sport.

Specifically, we invited Luke Ashmead, Miles Blumson and George Litchfield of BBC 3 Counties Sport. They are on a mission to try out new sports this year so this was the perfect opportunity.

You can listen to the first bit of broadcast gold at this link, which will take you to BBC Sounds. Herts appears at 15:00 minutes into the programme, and again at 50:00 minutes past for the finale. This went out on Friday May 30th – you can listen again at any time.

How did the presenters do??

Pete Hogg of the Herts Hawks and Rob Jones of the Herts Raptors took them through some basics of throwing and catching, before they got to try pitching and hitting. And they showed enthusiasm, talent and even potential!

Luke Ashmead was honest about the fact that he had played baseball before — at Herts! He joined the club for a training session when he was a younger man. But it was great to see that he had clearly remembered the lessons he was given, and he excelled with the bat.

Thanks to Luke, Miles and George for visiting us and being good sports, and for helping spread the word about baseball.

If you want to follow in their footsteps, there is a Contact Us link on the front page of this very website. Message us now and you too could soon be hitting and pitching!

Herts Baseball Club is stepping up to the plate once again for its second annual charity day in support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), following the success of last year’s inaugural event.

On Sunday 8 June 2025, Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead will host a day of games, fundraising and remembrance, aligning with Major League Baseball’s global Lou Gehrig Day campaign to spotlight ALS/MND and support those affected.

Baseball with a Bigger Purpose

Last year’s event raised over £1,400 and drew coverage from MLB.com and local media. This year’s fundraiser aims to go even further. To help, we have a raffle with some amazing prizes.

The winning ticket holders could take home items including:

A Rawlings baseball bat donated by Baseball Outlet

One of a range of MLB jerseys, including Cubs and Yankees, donated by MLB

Topps baseball cards and a PSA graded card donated by Home Plate Cards.

There will also be a packed schedule of events including official league games, and family-friendly activities. The ice bucket challenge will once again be sponsored by our friends at Ice Cool Ice.

On the field, fans can catch two headline matchups:

  • Herts Hawks vs Herts Harriers (AA League)
  • Herts Toucans vs Croydon Pirates (NBL)

“We’re proud to bring people together through baseball for a cause that matters,” said Michael Cresswell, President of Herts Baseball Club. “This event is a powerful reminder of what sport and community can do.”

Herts returns to top tier with Capital investment

Toucans land Herts back in the top tier

Herts is delighted to announce that the club will be returning to the top level of British baseball, the National Baseball League (NBL), in 2025.

The Capitals, who have been mainstays of the NBL for many years now, are moving over to the Herts organisation. They will now become the Herts Toucans, and will play most of their home games at Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead.

The team brings a wealth of experience to the club, and a record of success. They made five consecutive appearances in the national championship series from 2019 to 2023, and that has seen them qualify for European competitions too.

Herts club President, Mike Cresswell, welcomed the Capitals aboard: “We are delighted to have an amazing group of people who will contribute to Herts as a whole. The club is pleased to make a return to the NBL.”

Former opponents on the diamond, the Caps are joining Herts

The Herts Falcons were a regular fixture in the NBL after their promotion in 2008. They won the NBL regular season pennant in 2013, and their numerous playoff appearances reached a peak in 2018 when they made it to the final and qualified for Europe. Herts last had an NBL team in 2023, when the Falcons were part of an experiment at Grovehill featuring ticketing and promotions.

The club is keen to see the Toucans help build on a successful 2024, in which the Herts Cardinals in Triple-A and the Herts Ravens in Single-A both reached the post-season.

The Capitals had a 13-10 record last year, before being knocked out of the playoffs by the London Mets. They were formerly part of the London club, and will hope that this move is accompanied by another step up in their fortunes.

The 2025 BBF playoffs still await their climax but, whether your team made it to the post-season or not, arguably the best part of the year is still to come.

Every year, after the end of the BBF season and just when the MLB postseason is about to start, players from Herts and other British baseball clubs – as well as overseas players – compete over several weeks in a tournament in memory of Herts Baseball Club’s number 36, the late Kyle Hunlock.

SERIES FORMAT

This is the 19th year of the Hunlock Series. In its inaugural year in 2006 two teams were involved, the Falcons and the Hawks. The format of the competition has evolved since then. The club has over 170 registered adult players this year and a considerable number of new players are expected to register to play in the Series. As players sign up we will know how many teams will enter the Series this year.

SCHEDULE

A number of one-inning games will be played over three Sundays on 28 September, 5 and 12 October.

VENUES

Games will be played at two ballparks – the plan is for weeks 2 and 3 at Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead, and the opening week at Basing Hill Ballpark in London (both pictured above).

WHO CAN PLAY?

Any players aged 14 and over on 31 December 2025 are eligible to play in the Hunlock Series.

THE DRAFT

As in previous years, the teams will be selected by the team managers during the Hunlock Series Draft. Who will be the first round picks? How will Single-A league players and newcomers perform alongside NBL and Triple-A players?

Over the years we have seen how decisions made during the Draft can shape the outcome of the Series before a pitch has been thrown. The managers will have to make carefully calculated decisions if they are to put together a team which can compete for the Hunlock Series title, otherwise they could face a tough few weeks.

With all of the club’s managers and coaching staff observing these games, players who have been pushing for promotion to a higher league team will have the perfect opportunity during the Hunlock Series to make a claim to play on the bigger stage in 2026.

NEW PLAYERS

The club has also received enquiries from many potential new members over the last few weeks and this event is the ideal opportunity for them to come and play and help them decide whether to join the club for the 2026 season.

HOW TO REGISTER

All Hunlock Series players will be drafted into teams. To be eligible for the Draft we ask you to update your availability for the Hunlock Series dates in Spond by Sunday 14th September. If you miss the deadline or the first one or two weeks of games, don’t worry. You will still be eligible to play but will have to be assigned as a free agent after the Draft.

Click here to go to the registration form

ENTRY FEE

2025 Herts club members do not have to pay an entry fee as the Hunlock Series is part of their membership package. If you don’t have a Hunlock Series team shirt, you can buy one before your first game. The team shirt is expected to be priced at £10.

New players or players from other clubs can play by paying an entry fee of £25 which includes a free Hunlock Series shirt of the team which has drafted them.

Herts rallies support for MND on Lou Gehrig Day

Herts raises over £1,400 for MND on Lou Gehrig Day

Last week, Hertfordshire residents and businesses joined members of the baseball community in support of Motor Neurone Disease research for a charity event at a sunny Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead.

The fundraising event for the Motor Neurone Disease Association on Sunday 2 June attracted people from across Hertfordshire and beyond. They enjoyed hotdogs, home-baked cakes, and other food and drinks donated by volunteers and local businesses in a tremendous display of community spirit and support for a vital cause. The most intrepid took part in ice-bucket challenges.

(L-R) Pete Hogg, Hetty Smith, Mike Cresswell

Of course, this is a baseball club – so we had sporting challenges too. People of all ages and abilities joined in with a friendly softball match and other fun baseball games. Two of Herts’ British Baseball Federation (BBF) AA-league teams, the Hawks and the Ducks, battled it out in league games in front of a record number of spectators. Fittingly, they won one game each!

The event raised over £1,460 for the MND Association charity. It will be split between the national branch to fund medical research and the local branch to provide care and equipment for people in Hertfordshire living with MND.

June 2nd is a significant date for Major League Baseball (MLB), as America’s top professional league marks Lou Gehrig Day each year in honour of the former Yankees star player, and the degenerative disease that bears his name.

MLB featured Herts Baseball Club on their global website in the lead up to the event and donated an array of prizes, including team hats, jerseys, and tickets to the London Series games between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies at the London Stadium, which were eagerly won by attendees. Other great prizes included a bat, donated by Baseball Outlet, batting cage time donated by The 108 in Brent Cross, and a softball signed by the Great Britain Women’s World Cup team, donated by BSUK.

Eyes down for a raffle winner

The event took on an additional layer of significance as the day drew to a close, with the breaking news that another sporting legend, former Rugby League player Rob Burrow, passed away from Motor Neurone Disease.

Event organiser for Herts Baseball Club, Pete Hogg, who also ran the inaugural Rob Burrow Marathon for MNDA in 2023, remarked: “The generosity and enthusiasm of our volunteer team and everyone who chipped in with prizes and donations made the day a roaring success. I can’t thank them all enough. We are thrilled with the turnout and that everyone had an amazing fun day.”

“Rob Burrow and Lou Gehrig are both sporting icons who share the same tragic fate at the hands of Motor Neurone Disease, but will be remembered for generations to come as inspirational figures in their respective sports. The funds raised today will make a real difference in the fight against it.”

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Hetty Smith from the MND Association’s Hertfordshire branch, who was the guest of honour at the event. Speaking on behalf of the MND Association, she shared her gratitude: “The Hertfordshire Branch are immensely grateful to Pete Hogg for organising this event. Without the support of people like Pete and his friends, family, and colleagues, we would not be able to fund equipment for people living with this horrendous disease in Hertfordshire. Half of the funds raised will go to the National Office towards research funding which is hugely important. Events like this are also a very important way of raising awareness.”

Sweet treats

Herts Club President Michael Cresswell added: “We are grateful to the residents of Hertfordshire and beyond for their incredible support. Whether they attended, donated, or volunteered, their contributions have made a meaningful impact in our collective fight against Motor Neurone Disease. Herts Baseball Club plans to make Lou Gehrig Day an annual event and we hope to inspire other international clubs, players, and fans to get involved and make next year even bigger.”

The successful fundraiser not only generated significant funds for MND research but also showcased the growing enthusiasm for baseball in the UK. As the sport continues to gain momentum, events like this highlight its potential to bring people together for a greater good.
