Herts Baseball AGM details announced

Herts Baseball Club has confirmed that its 18th Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday, 23 November 2014.

Following one of its most successful seasons in 2013, this year Herts teams have seen more losses than wins on the field of play. Despite this the club has continued its success off-the-field and with two high-profile off-season player signings already announced, the club is in a good position to bounce back in 2015. The AGM will provide a deeper understanding of the club’s present position, and will set out the plans for 2015 and beyond.

Members will receive the AGM Information Pack in due course and that will give a better idea of what to expect at the meeting, but speaking ahead of the event, club President, Aspi Dimitrov, said that “Herts Baseball Club is at a stage where some pivotal decisions are about to be made and if we get them right we could see the club make big strides in the next few years”.

As part of the meeting, club members will elect members of the Board to fill the positions which will be vacated as part of the annual retirement of Board members. The positions which will be up for election at this AGM are Club Secretary, Third Team Manager, Fourth Team Manager, Youth League Commissioner, Head of under-14 Baseball, Head of U-12 Baseball and Communications Director.  Nominations for Board members are currently invited and those who are interested to put their name forward or second a nomination can contact the club for more details.

The Most Valuable Players of the various Herts adult and youth league teams will also be announced at the event.

Although only 2014 club members have the right to vote at the AGM, the meeting is very much open to former members and those who are considering joining the club in 2015 as players, members of staff, volunteers and fans. This is a good opportunity for newcomers to learn more about the club and meet its members. The meeting is also open to observers who are not members of the Club. Non-members who plan to attend would need to advise the club in advance as spaces are limited. If you are not a current member and wish to attend the AGM please contact the club.

The AGM will be held just a few minutes away from Grovehill Ballpark. The venue is the Gadebridge Community Centre.

DATE: Sunday, 23 November 2014

TIME: Registration starts at 12:45pm, the AGM will commence at 1:00pm (expected to end at around 4:45pm)

VENUE: The Halsey Hall, Gadebridge Community Centre, The Nokes, Rossgate, Gadebridge, Hemel Hempstead, HP1 3LF (Directions and Map)

The decision to choose New Era was made by Herts Baseball Club last year and the first stock arrived in the UK this week. The Herts Baseball Shop headed by Mark Caress is making last minute preparations and the caps will be available to buy at the shop this weekend.

Fans and players will be able to choose from three of New Era’s baseball cap models. The 59FIFTY cap is New Era’s signature fitted cap. Leading the Raptors into the new season

The Board of Herts Baseball are delighted to confirm the appointment of Rob Jones (above left) and Geoff Thomas as the co-managers of the Herts Raptors.

The Raptors will play in the Single-A League for 2014 after the BBF rejected their application to be promoted to Double-A.

This managerial role has been vacant since the club’s AGM last November.  On advertising the role, a large number of candidates expressed an interest, which gave the Board some real encouragement in the commitment at the club.  However, it also left them with a lot of thinking to do and choices to make!

The club now believe that, in Rob and Geoff, they have the right men for the job.

Rob Jones has considerable experience, having been with Herts since the early days when the club had only one team.  Rob has played a key role in the remarkable growth of Herts Baseball.

As a player, Rob was 2005 Batting Champion with the Herts Falcons second team playing in Division 1 (now AA) and in 2008 was Batting Champion for the Herts Raptors (Single-A league) and in the same season was awarded the Outfield Gold Glove.

Geoff Thomas is a knowledgeable player, with over 10 years playing experience.  Geoff has been a member of the Herts Eagles for the last 2 seasons, having previously played and been on the Board at Bristol.

Together, Rob and Geoff have outlined their vision for developing a team culture and have a strong coaching ethic to ensure the players understand all aspects of the game.

The timing of the appointment is key as the managers of the adult league teams will shortly be going through the process of determining their preliminary 2014 rosters.  The Raptors will be active in the Spring League series, commencing on 22 March with a home fixture against London Musketeers.

All at Herts Baseball are behind Rob and Geoff for a great season ahead.

GB call up for The Magnificent Seven

The Great Britain Under-16 National Team Manager has confirmed that the forthcoming 2014 season will have SEVEN members of Herts Baseball on the roster.

Conner Brown, Brodie Caress, Carlos Casal Jr., Tom Everex-Armstrong, Zack Longboy, Callum Vangundy and Dan Whitton have all received confirmation of their inclusion into the GB squad. Each are members of the Herts U17 team, currently preparing for the start of the British U17 league season which opens on 12 April.

Herts U17 manager, Cristobal Hiche, said: “Once again Herts has the privilege to have players considered for the GB squad. They should be very proud of their accomplishment so far.”

With a trip to Florida included in this year’s GB Under-16 schedule from 31 July to 10 August, these Herts players may miss quite a large number of games for their club in the U17 league and the adult leagues.  Whilst this is a major setback for the club, at the same time it is an opportunity for others to take their place and compete for that spot in the roster, hopefully developing their aspirations to be chosen as part of the National Team in the future.

The progress of Herts players with the GB teams is a tremendous boost for Herts Baseball as an organisation. The Club is even more excited by the fact that there are many more talented players coming through the various age groups of the Herts youth system, from the U11 and U14 teams through to the U/17 age group. It proves that the opportunity is there for any young players who want to get involved in baseball to progress and wear the GB Team jersey.

Of course, you don’t have to be a GB National Team player to play baseball.  Any interested players, boys and girls, between 6 and 16 years of age, from complete beginners to advanced players can join the Herts baseball youth teams.  Please get in touch if you would like to come and see what the club offer.

Dave Ames returns to the Herts Board as Club Secretary

Herts Baseball Club has announced that Dave Ames has been appointed as Club Secretary and member of the Executive Board.

Ames joined Herts in 2012 after previously playing for the Old Timers. He was part of the Herts Eagles roster during the 2012 and 2013 seasons playing second base. However, an ongoing ankle injury meant that he missed almost all of the 2013 season. The medical complications may mean that he may not be able to be involved on the field but he is keen to continue contributing off the field.

The Club Secretary role remained vacant after the club’s annual general meeting in November and Dave Ames’ appointment has now been confirmed.

Herts President Aspi Dimitrov said: “Dave joining the Board is fantastic news, not just in terms of increasing the capacity of the club’s front office and Executive Board, but also adds key expertise”. Ames is a town planner and his professional credentials may prove to be very valuable in upcoming club projects.

Get your gear ready for Spring Training

The Falcons modelling their performance jerseys a few months ago

As the Herts adult and youth team players prepare for the first Spring Training session of 2014 this Saturday, 25 January, everyone seems to be doing some very valuable forward-planning. We are seeing fielding gloves and all sorts of other equipment being delivered for the players. Others are checking their uniform items to see what they will need to restock for the upcoming season. This is where the Herts Club Shop can give players and fans a head-start.

Herts Harriers and Herts Ravens pitcher, Tom Armstrong, will be breaking in a new glove this Spring

For most of the first 5 months of the season weather conditions are likely to require an extra layer. Herts Shop Manager, Mark Caress, has the solution. “We have just received the shipment of Herts training fleeces which are available at £29 in all sizes from small to XXXL” said Caress. He added that “sizes tend to run small so I would suggest ordering a size bigger than players normally have. Players may also want to consider Majestic therma-base feather-lite undershirts available in sizes Large and XL which are ideal to use as winter undershirts and currently available in stock at only £20. We will have these and other items available to sell at the first training session this Saturday.”

Players and fans can indicate the items which they may be interested in by sending a message to the club to make sure that the products and sizes they are looking for are available on Saturday.

Herts AGM – in pursuit of growth and success on and off the field

With no baseball on TV it is easy to assume that baseball clubs around the world simply lock up their ballparks and fly off to warm destinations for the five months of the winter close season between November and March. In fact the close season is a very busy and important period for the MLB clubs.

This is also the case at Herts Baseball Club. The club held its Annual General Meeting appointing the Executive Board for the upcoming season.

Herts will go into the new season with a strong team in all departments, the number of which seems to be increasing every year. There are some new faces joining the club’s Board who will bring fresh ideas and new energy, and at the same time the club has retained a large number of the 2013 Board members which will provide continuity in the club’s pursuit of growth and success on and off the field.

The following is the full list of the 2014 Herts Baseball Executive Board. There are several vacant positions which the club is aiming to fill in the coming weeks as it prepares for another season of Herts baseball. Those interested in any of the vacant Board positions or for more information about them can contact the club.

President – Aspi Dimitrov

Co-Treasurers – Chris Jones and Aspi Dimitrov

Secretary – Vacant

Manager (First Team – NBL) – Lee Manning

Manager (Second Team – AAA) – Carlos Casal

Co-Managers (Third Team – AA) – Andy Cornish and Greg Bochan

Manager (Fourth Team – A) – Vacant

Manager (Fifth Team – A) – Vacant

Youth League Commissioner – Aspi Dimitrov

Head of U17 Baseball – Cristobal Hiche

Head of U14 Baseball – Jake Caress

Head of U11 Baseball – Vacant

Softball League Commissioner – Vacant

Club Shop Manager – Mark Caress

Communications Director – Ben Marques

Facilities Manager – Ben Marques

Board member-at-large – Joe Gray

Board member-at-large – Kevin Freeman

After the Board’s 2013 report and approval of the 2012 accounts, the Co-Treasurers presented preliminary financial results for the year to 31 October 2013. The full financial statements are expected to be finalised and presented to members for approval over the next few months. The preliminary results are positive with a good accumulation of reserves which are available for the club to invest in its future development and growth and as partnership funding in grant applications. Despite a reduction in debtors compared to 2012, the balance remained high and it was confirmed that the Treasury department is in the process of implementing various steps, from sending out reminder notices to court proceedings where necessary. It is hoped that these stricter procedures will address this issue.

Two constitutional amendments were approved unanimously. The implications are that Board members will now serve 3-year terms as opposed to the 1-year terms in previous years. In the interest of continuity, a rotation system will be in place every year so that only a third of the Board will stand down. At the same time the amendments give members and the Board some safeguards when it is in the club’s best interest for a member of the Board to stand down before the end of their term.

With a large number of changes in youth baseball announced earlier this month at the British Baseball Federation Congress, the Herts AGM assessed them and considered the available options. The transition will not be easy but significant gains are available for those who put the time and effort into youth baseball.

A proposal for the start of a Herts regional league were put forward. There can be significant benefits from this project provided that it can fit into the timetable of players and around the club’s existing departments and events schedule. The club will assess potential demand, scheduling and other aspects of the project.

The Single-A League department was covered extensively with various topics from the process of drafting the players to an option to enter a Herts team or teams in a proposed Midlands Single-A league.

Herts confirm AGM details

Herts Baseball Club has confirmed that its 17th Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday, 17 November 2013.

2013 has been one of the most successful years in the club’s history with five of the club’s nine teams reaching the postseason in the various senior and youth British Baseball leagues. The AGM will provide a deeper understanding of what that on-field success means for the club’s various departments, whether the club has achieved growth financially and an increase in the number of its members and fans.

Members will receive the AGM Information Pack in due course and that will give a better idea of what to expect. We understand that the meeting is likely to look at the options available to the club to make the step up to the next level and stay ahead of the rest.

Apart from the end of year financial and other reports from the club’s departments, club members will be asked to elect the members of the Board for the forthcoming year. Nominations for Board members are currently invited and those who are interested to put their name forward or second a nomination can contact the club for more details.

Although only 2013 paying members have the right to vote at the AGM, the meeting is very much open to former members and those who are considering joining the club in 2014 as players, members of staff, volunteers and fans. This is a good opportunity for newcomers to learn more about the club and meet its members. The meeting is also open to observers who are not members of the Club, but they would need to advise the club in advance as spaces are limited. If you are not a current member and wish to attend the AGM please contact the club.
