Cornish dinger not enough as Hawks are brought down by Spitfires

Andy Cornish hit another of his home runs on Sunday

written by Andy Cornish

Herts Hawks ended up losing 3-15 to a better, and undefeated, Daws Hill Spitfires side this weekend, but there were many positives to take away from the game, with good defence and the Hawks first home run of the year.

The Hawks turned up to the game at Daws Hill with only 9 players, and the ever-present Debra Devine. The pitcher for the Spitfires was Nic Stolz, whose reputation is growing with every game. His fastball and dropping curveball kept Hawks off the board until the third, with Daws hill adding 5 runs over that span. In the third, Andy Cornish, leading off the inning sent a 0-1 pitch towering over the left field wall for the first Hawks homer of the year. In that inning, the Hawks used the momentum to score another 2 runs with John Kjorstad and Paul Auchterlounie crossing the plate.

Solid infield defence by the Hawks kept the score at 5-3 until the 5th. 7 Daws Hill runners crossed home plate in the inning, with only a few errors, finding the holes in the field and a 2-run home run down to right field by left-hander Luis Hernandez. Ilya Dimitrov and Bobby Gould were starting to feel the intensity of the game, both picking up leg injuries. Hawks were not able to come back, and often got fooled by the curveball of Stolz for the rest of the game.

Hawks manager, Andy Cornish, commented “I wanted to come into today and show desire and play hard. We were able to do that in the first 5 innings, but I think that the injuries got to us. I am happy with how the infield played in some very tricky bouncing conditions, but think that we have to work on our hitting. The pitcher was good, but we helped him with swinging at a lot of balls outside the zone. It was always going to be tricky, and to Daws Hill credit, they hit well. I want to focus on the next game, and come out and show how we can hit.”

8 Herts teams in action this weekend

SATURDAY

The baseball weekend begins with games from the BBF U17 League and the Herts U11 Series at Grovehill Ballpark. The U17 teams of Herts, Horsham and Leicester will clash in a repeat of their round-robin day played on 18 May.

U17 League: 10:30 Leicester Blue Sox vs Herts Harriers (6 innings)

U17 League: 13:00 Horsham Hornets vs Leicester Blue Sox (6 innings)

U17 League: 15:30 Herts Harriers vs Horsham Hornets (6 innings)

At the same time on the Old Diamond the U11 Series between the Herts Dodgers and the Herts Giants continues. After last week’s game, the Giants lead the series by 1 game. This Saturday the teams will play two games, a chance for the Dodgers not only to tie the series but maybe even jump ahead of the Giants.

U11 League: 10:00 Herts Dodgers vs Herts Giants (4 innings)

U11 League: 12:00 Herts Dodgers vs Herts Giants (4 innings)

SUNDAY

Rei Martinez (right) is expected to start one of the games against the Falcons this Sunday. He also leads the Blazers in home runs.

NBL

The Herts Falcons (10-4) travel to the impressive Bracknell Blazers (7-7) this Sunday looking to keep their momentum after 4 edge-of-the-seat wins against the Mustangs and the Mets who were ahead of the Falcons in the standings before these encounters. Herts are now tied in first place with London, however they will know that a slip-up could undo all the good work of the past few weeks and give London and Southampton the advantage again.

They are coming up against a Bracknell team which has rebuilt very well after a disappointing 2012 season which they finished with 6 wins and 16 losses (win-loss % .273). Their pitching staff is considered one of the best in the NBL and they have already proven that they are capable of beating anyone. Jordan Edmonds, Rei Martinez and Henry Collins are the likely starting pitchers.

The Falcons go into the game with injury worries once again. Catcher, Dave Westfallen, was added to the list of injured players after he aggravated an old knee injury against the Mets last Sunday.

AAA -EAGUE

There were some heated moments, last time the Leones were in town (photo by Will Baxter)

It has been confirmed that this Sunday’s AAA-League doubleheader between the Herts Ravens and the Leones de Feltham has been moved to Grovehill Balpark. The games was originally scheduled to be played at Glebelands Field near Heathrow (West London), but the Leones have had ongoing problems with their field this season with many of their home games played at the venue of their opponents. The Ravens will still be considered the visitors in this game (i.e. batting first). The first game starts at 12:00 at the Old Diamond.

AA-LEAGUE

The Hawks travel to RAF Daws Hill where they will meet the unbeaten Spitfires (6-0). The last encounter between the two teams in 2012 ended with two wins for the Hawks which secured a playoff spot for them. The tables have turned to a certain extent as Herts expanded into 5 teams with many of last year’s Hawks moving up into AAA, while the Spitfires have reinforced well and have notched up 6 convincing wins to make them the favourites for the AA-League title.

A-LEAGUE

The Herts Raptors come up against the Leicester 2Sox looking to stay top of the table. They won convincingly when the two teams met in Leicester on Opening Day. However, since then the Sox have been playing .500 baseball picking up 2 wins against the Old Timers and a heart-stopper 19-18 win against the Blackjacks. The game starts at 12:00pm at the New Diamond of Grovehill Ballpark, in Hemel Hempstead.

The Eagles travel to the Haverhill Blackjacks with a .500 win-loss record so far. They were outplayed by the Richmond Dukes last Sunday, so Manager Duncan Hoyle will need to pick up his players and get back to winning ways. A win on Sunday could see them go top of the standings depending on other results.

Hawks split a hard-fought double header with Guildford Mavericks

Hunter Devine was the hero driving in the tying and winning runs with the pressure of 2 outs and 2 strikes in the last inning

The double header between the Herts Hawks and Guildford Mavericks played on Sunday, 19 May, could have been billed as a replay of last season’s playoff quarter-final that saw the Hawks go through to the National Championships. However, with the expansion of the Herts organisation to five adult teams, it was inevitable that the squad to face the Mavericks would not be the same. Despite missing big guns like Louis Hare, Jon Lewys, Nic Goetz, Rod Naghar and Andrew Fullford, among others, the Hawks came out ready for battle and dead set to make a good showing.

Game 1: Guildford 5 – Herts 6

In the first game, Guildford were able to take an early lead, chipping away and getting a couple of runs in the first 2 innings, Nick Russell gaining more control as the game went on and limited the Mavericks well. The Mavericks pitcher was dominant, and whilst allowing 2 base runners through 4 innings was able to keep Herts to no runs. In the 5th, Herts were able to get 4 runs on the board with Tim Elkins and Ilya Dimitrov coming around before Hunter Devine and Andy Cornish (1RBI) crossed the plate on a 2 RBI hit from John Kjorstad. With the score 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th, with 2 down, Herts brought the house down with a walk off single from Hunter Devine (3RBI’s on the day) between the first and second baseman, scoring Elkins and Dimitrov again. The Herts players went crazy, with celebrations similar to those seen in the playoffs.

Game 2: Guildford 12 – Herts 1

After the elation for the Hawks in the first game, the second game went more to form, with Guildford keeping their tight defence and good pitching that they have become known for. Nick Russell continued on the mound before having to be removed due to the regulation on innings pitched. Herts eventually turned to Andrew Slater, the giant of a man to get outs that had eluded Jose Morillo Jr and Andy Cornish, but by this time it was too late and Guildford had racked up 7 runs in the inning. Herts were able to score a single run in the game. Although disappointing, there was a silver lining in Slater proving once again his ability to throw strikes and get outs, staking a claim for more mound appearances.

After the game, one of Hawk’s co-managers, Andy Cornish, commented: “I think that we should be very happy with the first game. Elkins in particular had very strong at bats, taking pitches, battling off the ones he didn’t want, which set him and the team up for a nail biting finish. The second game was a bit of a let down. I think that after a few experiments on the mound, we found a good pitcher in Andy Slater and he kept the run count down. We are still learning as a team and these games have answered a few questions. I hope that in the next games we continue to develop and can emulate some of the wonders and excitement from today’s first game.” The reaction of the other Hawk’s manager, Greg Bochan, (who had to leave at the start of the second game) to the final outcome was: “Jeez… Well, OK.” This pretty much summed it up.

Hawks Overcome by Mammoths Stampede

Match report by Ben Marques

The Herts Hawks were absolutely chomping at the bit to begin their season, but with rain pouring down on Friday and again on Saturday, these hopes were looking in doubt.  However, the baseball gods were looking down at Grovehill early on Sunday morning, as the sun beat down, drying out the boggy parts of the Old Diamond.

The game started off with the Mammoths scoring two runs on three hits, setting the pace for what was set to be a tight game. The bottom of the first also went the way of London, striking out the side.

Ben Marques
New AA player Ben Marques at bat

The top of the second looked like the momentum was swinging back in favour of the Hawks, the only blip being a throwing error charged to second baseman Ben Marques, after he attacked a slow roller, picking up but throwing wide of Greg Bochan at first base. The error meant nothing, as Marques completed a 4-3 put out on the next play, and starting pitcher Nick Russell rung up the following hitter.

The Hawks’ momentum continued into the bottom of the inning with the Herts side getting one hit and two walks. However, a lapse in concentration cost them two base runners, with the third out being Callum Vangundy going down swinging.

The fourth inning contained eight runs, with a 4-4 split. Herts’ runs came from what looked like a sure fire triple from OF/C Paul Auchterlounie, however, the hole in the fence restricted him to a Ground Rule Double. Jose Morillo Jr. came in for Vangundy and singled, moving the runner over. Both Morillo and Auchterlounie scored on an error, which left Hunter Devine on second.

Bobby Gould earned a walk, which looked like a good rally starting to build for the Hawks.  But Ross Asquith was out on an infield fly, and Bochan swiftly grounded out. Ilya Dimitrov (1-4, 1R, 2RBI) came to the plate with two outs, and came through with a two-out, 2-run single.

The Hawks couldn’t build on this momentum as Russell grounded out ending the inning, with the Hawks two runs behind, 7-5. The Mammoths then put six runs on three hits with four errors, one LOB in the fifth, shutting the Hawks out in reply.

After five innings, Nick Russell was finished pitching for the day.  Hertsbaseball.com asked Nick how he felt after a long off-season:

“I felt a bit rusty and started aching after only a few innings.”

“Were you confident with AA rookies supporting you on the mound?”

“I wasn’t sure about the new Hawks, as I hadn’t seen them play before. The jump from A to AA will be tough on some players but with a bit more training and game time I’m sure they will be picking up their game. The new guys showed a lot of enthusiasm which helped us rally back and score a few runs.”

Greg Bochan came in to relieve for Russell, who had pitched better than his line score suggested: 5IP; 12H; 13R; 5ER; 2BB; 3K, and immediately made a statement, earning four outs in seven pitches. His AA rookies Marques and Devine both made great plays in support of their manager, Marques a 4-3 put out and Devine making a great backhanded snare L6.

Nick Russell
Nick Russell pitched five innings with three srikeouts

Russell and John Kjorstad made the other two outs in centre-field and right field. After that though, London kept putting bat on ball and finding gaps, going 8-8, 1K and an F8.

The bottom of the 7th inning meant the Hawks needed seven runs to avoid a mercy rule defeat. Nick Russell (1-4, 1R) led off, and set the rally going, with Marques then reaching on an error after laying down a bunt down the third base line. Russell advanced to third.

Auchterlounie stepped up to the plate, and reached on an error, plating Russell (he ended his day 2-3 with 2R). Marques had stolen second, and advanced to third on the error, but as he rounded third, the ball was still a fair way out. He went for it, and a huge collision at home plate followed from a great throw. Marques was called out, and time was taken for the catcher to recover, who to his credit still had the ball in his mitt. This summed up Marques’ day at the plate, who struggled going 0-4, 1SB, 2Ks.

With one out, Jose Morillo Jr. popped up for the second out, leaving a huge task for the team, particularly Devine who reached on an error and later scored along with Auchterlounie from a 2-run single by Bobby Gould (1-2, 1R, 2RBI). This brought Ross Asquith (1-4) to the plate who, although still showing speed, was unable to beat out the throw, and grounded out, ending Herts’ hopes of an
Opening Day win.

After a 21-8 loss, it might be fair to say that the Hawks have yet to hit their stride offensively. On a warm but windy afternoon, the Hawks ended up scoring eight runs on seven hits, striking out six times. The Hawks also struggled with  runners in scoring position, going 4-11).

“I think everybody is trying to get to where we want to be,” Ben Marques said. “Everybody is battling, we’ve had bad weather and limited training sessions, both inside and outside. A new group of players stepping up to AA:  myself, John, Hunter and Jose Jr.  As well as losing some great players like Nic Goetz and Rod Naghar…It has been a combination of things, but I don’t think anybody is concerned about our offense just yet, not after Game 1. I’m not. It’s a long grind.”

However, the Herts fielding was better than the line score suggested with Gold Glove performances from rookies Marques, Devine and Kjorstad, as well as Russell and Auchterlounie.  All five had outstanding days in the field letting nothing past, with Marques the busiest at second base with a left-handed heavy lineup (1 tag, 6 put-outs).

After the game, we asked Hawks manager, Greg Bochan, for his assessment of the performance:

Next time around we need better organization. There were a lot of missed cuts from the outfield and a general sense of players not knowing where to be.

“Although the Hawks lost, what positives can the team take from the game?”

Stand out moments would be our middle infield. Ben made a bunch of great plays and Hunter made that
awesome grab at short.

“Finally, what are you looking for from your team next time around?”

Next time around I am looking forward to a little more attention to detail. A little more baseball smarts. I think that will have to start with pre-game infield/outfield.

Challenging season ahead for the Hawks

Many of the 2012 Hawks who reached the National Semi-Final have moved up to the Herts Ravens but the core remains and some new faces have been added

The Herts Hawks get their season underway this Sunday at home against the London Mammoths at Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead (first pitch 12:00pm). We caught up with one half of the Hawks managerial duo, Andy Cornish, to get a sense of the mood in the Hawks club house.

We are just days away from Opening Day. Do you feel ready or has the bad weather in March affected preparations?

Andy Cornish: Yes, totally. The indoor training was great, but there is a certain something that you get from playing games and getting used to the ground. Last weekend, with our first game outdoors, was something that we feel should have happened a few weeks earlier, but that is life, we all have to deal with the same situation, and I look forward to a summer of warmth!

What are your main goals for this season?

Andy Cornish: I think that this season is going to be challenging. Our main goal is to get a few wins, develop a few players and have fun while doing it.

What win-loss percentage would be seen as a successful season for the team and is it realistic to expect your team to reach the playoffs or even challenge for the title?

Andy Cornish: For the hawks, a .500 would be a successful season. We are in a season of re-building at our level, so if we get a few players playing above that, getting called up, then I will be chuffed

Will the entry of the Herts Ravens in the AAA League affect your team’s chances this season by diluting the strength of the Herts rosters across a larger number of teams?

Andy Cornish: As an organisation, we have got stronger. The AAA addition will help get the younger players, and the players with drive to increase their game. It was always going to be tough for our team, going from a post-season type team, a lot of the players were bound to get the call, and I would have been upset if they didn’t. But it does reduce some of our quality, which gives the players coming up the opportunity to shine and develop. I am looking forward to the challenge

Who are the players we should look out for this year?

Andy Cornish: I am looking forward to getting a few guys on the field, Hunter is back, Ben is new to the team, John Kjorstad is always a pro, but I will always have a bit of a moment when Nick Russell gets on the mound. Nick was a class act last year, and with a pitcher of his quality, you always have that little bit more of a chance of winning the game.

Which of your opponents in the league are likely to be the biggest challengers for the national title?

Andy Cornish: Guildford play excellent baseball, but as we found out last year, it is the midland teams that are the ones to beat.

Which league game are you looking forward to most?

Andy Cornish: The first home game. Always.

The postseason playoffs will be played at the brand new Farnham Park. Will this act as an even greater incentive for players to reach the postseason?

Andy Cornish: It is always a pleasure to play at home, and especially for the post season, so I will miss that. Herts has grown so much over the last few years and we would have liked Herts to continue to be the home of baseball for post-season. The new Farnham Park is always going to have a special place from now on, and that additional excitement to go to another field, specially made for baseball in the UK, then of course it is going to have an effect.

What is your message to Herts Baseball fans ahead of Opening day?

Andy Cornish: Hello. Come down, watch some baseball!

The people who make things happen

Tim Elkins wearing his Herts cap at Boston Red Sox Spring training with the World Series trophy

Herts Baseball Club is blessed with so many fantastic members and volunteers who generously give their time, energy and apply their expertise to build a truly special club, but there are volunteers like Tim Elkins who take contribution to a whole new level.

Tim joined Herts at the start of the 2006 British baseball season and since then, in addition to being a player, he has acted in many different capacities from team manager, coach and member of the club’s front office to being part of the grounds crew, field maintenance and events staff.

During that period Tim Elkins has persistently been submitting his application to link his work as Herts Baseball volunteer to the Royal Bank of Scotland Community Cashback Scheme. The scheme rewards the work of people like Tim by making a cash contribution to the community groups which they are involved in.

Every year since 2007 Tim’s applications to RBS have successfully been bringing in cash grants for Herts Baseball which have accumulated nearly £2,000. Contributions like this have enabled the club to meet the match-funding requirements of grants such as the recent BSUK facilities grant which saw around £17,000 go into the upgrade of Grovehill Ballpark to make it one of the premier baseball venues in the UK.

Not many know that in addition to his contribution as volunteer and the RBS grants, Tim Elkins, together with his parents, Derek and Josephine Elkins, have made substantial cash donations which have reached a four-digit number.

When people look around Grovehill Ballpark, they won’t see his name but they should know that Tim Elkins has played a major part in building the facility and the community which people see today.

It will not be easy for members and fans to express with words their appreciation for what Tim has done for their favourite club, but Tim should know that, when people tip their cap to say hello, it is intended as more than just a greeting.

Preliminary rosters announced by Herts

The five Herts senior league teams have announced their preliminary rosters ahead of the 2013 Herts Spring League which gets underway next Saturday, 23 March.

Since the start of Spring Training Herts players have been pushing themselves to secure a roster spot within the Herts adult team structure. Some have been targeting a move to a Herts team playing in a higher league. Others have been looking to reinforce their place within their current team. It is a moment of trepidation for the players as they learn whether they have met that target, as illustrated in the movie Major League (see video clip).

But don’t worry folks. Herts has room for all its players and no one is going to get cut – everyone plays. The club is continuing to receive enquiries from new players every week and players can be added to the rosters at any time of the year. For more information on how to join the club or to give baseball a try contact the club.

Those who were hoping to secure a spot in a higher league team should bear in mind that this is just a preliminary roster. We still expect player movement over the next three weeks of HSL action as the managers will be assessing not only the players in their roster but those in other rosters with a view to promoting them or to assess backup options for later in the season. As always there is bound to be player movement up and down the rosters throughout the season, just like MLB teams move their players up and down their affiliated minor and major league teams.

A quick look through the rosters reveals interesting information ahead of the season. The core of each team remains intact, but there is a visible movement of players upwards, which was expected due to the creation of the Herts Ravens as the club’s fifth team which will compete in AAA. Most of the previously announced new additions such as Carlos Velazco-Carus, Joe Gray, John Blose, Xavier Gonzalez and Dave Westfallen have been added to the NBL roster.

Tom Everex-Armstrong is one of 10 Herts players who are also in the Great Britain U19 or U16 preliminary rosters

But there are some significant reinforcements in the other teams. The club has been joined by Elie Colin who played in the French league last season and he goes into the AAA roster for Manager, Carlos Casal, to have a first-hand look before making a decision. Gilberto Medina has moved up two leagues to the Ravens from the Raptors. Other players moving up into the AAA squad are the club’s U17 prospects Carlos Casal Jr, Jake Caress, Kyle Lloyd-Jones, Tom Everex-Armstrong and the club’s new arrival, catcher Conner Brown. All of these young players are currently in the preliminary rosters of the Great Britain U19 or U16 teams and playing in the AAA league will challenge them to push themselves even harder. An interesting late addition is returning right-handed pitcher, Pete Kikel, announced just a few hours ago.

The Hawks have added to the core from last year’s successful squad, by drafting John Kjorstad and Ben Marques from the Raptors, returning catcher and infielder Hunter Devine and the fastest man on the planet, Ross Asquith, who during fitness sessions this Spring with fitness coach Tony Marshall was discovered to have the extraordinary ability to jump up in the air higher than the average professional athlete. The other two additions are Callum Vangundy, Jonny Compton-Weight and Jose Morillo from the Herts U17 team.

Right-handed pitcher Jeff Witter makes his return with the Raptors. Moving into the roster from last year’s Eagles team is the South African duo, Theo Scheepers and Craig Le Roux, as well as infielder Sonny Lama, pitcher Will Zucker and his younger brother Martin Zucker who looks likely to be pushing up the leagues in the coming years as a catcher. Warwick Byrne is another addition from the club’s U17 team.

The Eagles will be missing Joseph Osborne-Brade as he is on the long-term DL after a serious injury last season. They will look to fill the gap left by Osborne-Brade and the others who have moved up to the other teams by adding Rob Crouch, Manny Banson, father-and-son combination of John and Tom Jansson, debutants Harry Douglas, Jonny Gates, Ashley Hughes and the exciting prospect of Daniela Phillips who joined the club after bumping into the Herts teams during her indoor cricket training session at the same venue as the Herts baseball teams.

Herts Hawks infielder to make 387 home run trots without a break for Crimestoppers UK

At the London Marathon Ralph Bartholomew will have to cover a distance equivalent to making 387 home run trots around the bases, without a break.

2011 Infield Gold Glove winner and Herts Hawks member Ralph Bartholomew has been unable to participate in Spring Training this year as he’s deep into a training programme to prepare to run in the 33rd Virgin London Marathon this April. Although Ralph is not normally a long-distance runner and prefers the slightly less gruelling sport of baseball, he’s taken up the challenge in order to raise funds for the charity Crimestoppers UK.

As you might know, Crimestoppers runs a nationwide anynymous tip line that leads directly to over 20 arrests every day, as well as running outreach programmes for young people in communities across the country. Crimestoppers have set a fundraising target for Ralph, so unfortunately he can’t do it without a little help. If you can make any contribution to support a good cause (no donation is too small), please visit Ralph’s fundraising page.

Spring Training commences for Herts baseball teams

It may be cold outside but, as far as the members of Herts Baseball Club are concerned, the long dark days of winter are over. On Sunday the Herts adult team members reported for the first Spring Training session of 2013. Throughout January and February the Herts teams will be preparing indoors at Berkhamsted SportSpace, which has good facilities including batting nets, however t is becoming obvious that the club has outgrown this venue and must start to look for an alternative in the winter of 2014 as the large number of players found it difficult to fit into the large sports hall. Thankfully the meteorological conditions were very good and the teams were able to use outdoor third-generation artificial pitches.

As usual in these first few weeks of Spring, the coaches put the players through their paces to rebuild physical and arm strength and stamina and work through baseball fundamentals of the defensive and offensive aspects of the game. Gradually the sessions will start to focus on specific positions to fine-tune the club’s pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders.

Apart from the returning players, the club had a chance to see some of the new faces which will be wearing the Herts jersey in 2013. The entry of a fifth Herts team in the adult leagues adds a new dimension to the process of assigning players to the five teams and it will be interesting to see which team roster the new recruits will appear in on Opening Day.

Of course the process of recruiting adult and youth team players continues and new players can join at any time throughout the year. With its teams competing in the various major and minor leagues of British baseball, Herts is able to offer baseball playing opportunities to players of any standard from complete beginners to advanced and experienced ballplayers. For more details about joining the Herts teams, contact us.

Quote of the day goes to New Yorker, Greg Bochan. Over the years he has stayed strictly away from discussions linked to football (soccer) in any way. While doing a ground ball drill with Tim Elkins and Rod Naghar, out of nowhere Bochan asked “What did you guys think about Eden Hazard and that ballboy?”

Play of the day goes to new signing John Blose. This was his first appearance in training with the Herts teams. While fielding a fly ball on the run at the indoor venue, he ended up colliding with the wall and taking out the fire exit door in the process. Herts fans should not worry. Blose came out unscathed from the collision.

Spring Training for the adult teams continues next Sunday.

Spring training dates for the Herts youth teams (6 to 16-year-olds) will be announced shortly and new members can sign up for those sessions by contacting the club.

Herts players report for training this Sunday. 2013 Spring Training dates announced.

The snow has covered the United Kingdom and there is a long way to go before the arrival of the British baseball season, but baseball teams up and down the country are starting their preparations for what they hope will be a winning season.

For the adult team players of Herts Baseball Club Spring Training (pre-season) preparations commence this Sunday, 27 January.

As in previous seasons the teams will start with indoor sessions in the first few weeks of Spring Training at Berkhamsted SportSpace. On 3 March 2013 the players will return to Grovehill Ballpark for the first outdoor training session of 2013.

On March 10 rostered Herts players and all newcomers who are interested to play with Herts in the 2013 league season will take part in the Open Try Outs for adults (players aged 14 or above on 31 December 2013). They will undergo a series of tests and drills which will enable the coaching staff to assess the players before they make their roster picks later in that month ahead of Opening Day.

We are still expecting a final confirmation from the BBF about the 2013 BBF League Opening Day. The latest information is that the NBL season will open on March 30-31 while the minor leagues (AAA, AA, A) will get their season under way a week later on 6-7 April.

The eagerly awaited Herts Spring League dates are still provisional and will be confirmed as soon as the BBF Opening Day is confirmed.

Those adults (aged 14 and above) who are interested in giving baseball a go can come to any of the upcoming Spring Training dates with the Herts adult teams. Regardless of whether you are a complete beginner or experienced player with many years of baseball under your belt, Herts Baseball Club will be eager to welcome you for an exciting season of baseball as the organisation continues its excellent growth. Players aged between 6 and 16 can look forward to joining up with the club’s youth league teams. The Spring Training dates for the youth teams are expected to be announced shortly. For more details of how to get involved with either the adult or the youth teams, please contact us.

Here is listing of the Spring Training dates for the Herts senior league teams (the dates for the youth teams will be announced shortly).
